Flour: Achieving a blend of both all-purpose and white wheat flour brings forth a balanced combination of taste and nutritional value. If preferred you can solely use all-purpose flour. Incorporating the wheat flour adds a delightful nutty element.

Brown Sugar: The addition of sugar imparts a sweetness akin, to molasses that beautifully complements the apple and spices. Light or dark brown sugar both work splendidly.

Spices: Cinnamon, nutmeg and allspice infuse the fritters with flavors that flawlessly enhance the apples.

Butter: Incorporating butter, cut into pieces into the dough creates a flaky texture.

Milk: Opting for milk with a higher fat content like whole milk or 2% lends an indulgent flavor to the final result. In case of restrictions, dairy-free alternatives such as almond or soy milk can be used.

Egg: The egg serves as a binding agent. Contributes to the structure of the fritters.

Vanilla Extract: A touch of vanilla extract elevates the flavor profile by adding sweetness and aromatic depth.

Chopped Apple: Choose your apple variety like Granny Smith or Honeycrisp for an explosion of fruity goodness, in every bite.

For the Glaze:

Confectioners’ Sugar: Also known as powdered sugar it forms the foundation of the glaze by providing sweetness and ensuring a velvety texture.

Milk: Using a bit of milk with a slightly higher fat content helps to achieve a smooth and even spread of the glaze.

Vanilla Extract: The addition of vanilla extract enhances the glaze’s flavor and aroma perfectly balancing its sweetness.

Steps To Make Baked Apple Fritters:

Step 1: Okay, let’s kick things off! First, set your oven to a toasty 400 degrees Fahrenheit. While it’s warming up, grab a trusty baking sheet and lay down a silicone baking mat. If you don’t have one, don’t sweat it; the fritters will still be amazing, and your pan can take a little extra TLC later.

Step 2: In a big bowl, gather your dry crew—flours, brown sugar, baking powder, and the flavor squad (cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, and a pinch of salt). They’re about to join forces to create fritter awesomeness. Now, cut in cold butter until things look kind of crumbly. It’s like making a sweet, buttery sandcastle!

Step 3: In a smaller bowl, it’s time for the wet ingredients to party: milk, an egg (the binder of dreams), and a splash of vanilla extract for that extra ‘oomph.’ Pour this creamy blend into your dry mix, and oh boy, it’s getting exciting.

Step 4: Got a crisp apple? Chop it up and toss it in. These fritters love the company of a good apple. Stir until everyone’s mingling nicely.

Step 5: Using a 1/4 cup scoop, dollop your fritter mix onto the baking sheet. If you want cute mini fritters, just grab a heaping tablespoon. Pop ’em in the oven for about 11-13 minutes. You’ll know they’re ready when they’re golden brown below and firm in the middle. Mini fritters? Check after 8 minutes.

Step 6: While your fritters cool slightly, whip up the glaze. Mix confectioner’s sugar, milk, and a dash of vanilla extract until it’s smooth and beautiful. Brush a bit over your fritters, then give them a brief tanning session under the broiler for that golden glow.

Step 7: Back from their golden transformation, brush more glaze on your warm fritters. Let that glaze set up shop, and you’re ready to serve these beauties. Remember, they’re at their peak on the same day, so invite your taste buds to the fritter fiesta ASAP!

Ingredients

Scale

For the Fritters:

3/4 c. all-purpose flour

3/4 c. white whole wheat flour

1/2 c. brown sugar

2 tsp. baking powder

1 tsp. cinnamon

1/2 tsp. nutmeg

1/4 tsp. allspice

1/4 tsp. salt

6 tbsp. butter, cold and cut into pieces

1/2 c. milk (the higher the fat content, the richer the flavor)

1 egg

1 tsp. vanilla extract

1 c. chopped apple

For the Glaze:

1 c. confectioner’s sugar

2 tbsp. milk (a higher percentage of fat works the best)

1 tsp. vanilla extract

Instructions

Preheat your oven to 400°F. Line a baking sheet, with a silicone baking mat (if it’s suitable for broiling). Or use it without a mat for cleaning.

In a bowl whisk together the all-purpose flour, white whole wheat flour, brown sugar, baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice and salt. Add the butter diced into pieces and mix it into the mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs.

In a bowl whisk together the milk, egg and vanilla extract. Pour this mixture into the ingredients and stir until they are just combined. Carefully fold in the chopped apple.

Using a measuring cup of 1/4 cup capacity drop portions of the batter onto the baking sheet. If you prefer smaller fritters use a heaping tablespoon of batter for each.

Bake for 11 to 13 minutes until the bottoms turn brown and the centers become firm. If you’re making smaller fritters start checking for doneness at 8 minutes. Remove them from the oven. Switch to broil mode.

While waiting for the oven to heat up for broiling prepare the glaze by whisking together confectioners’ sugar with milk and vanilla extract until you achieve consistency. Brush a layer of glaze, over each fritter.
Put the fritters underneath the broiler. Let them cook for 2 to 4 minutes until the tops begin to take on a golden hue and the glaze starts to bubble.

Take out the baking sheet from the oven carefully and move the fritters onto a wire rack. Brush the remaining glaze, onto the fritters while they are still warm.

Allow some time for the glaze to solidify then they will be ready to be served. It is recommended to enjoy these apple fritters on the same day, for optimal satisfaction.

Notes

To construct these delectable Baked Apple Fritters without gluten you can efficiently supersede the all-purpose flour and white whole wheat flour, with a gluten-free flour blend of your choice. Just make sure that all the elements you utilize including the baking powder and spices are permitted gluten-free to preclude any cross contamination. This way you’ll have fritters that are safe for everyone to relish without any worries.
